2022/2023 ANNUAL WORKSHOP

“From ensemble perturbations to an effective usage of ensemble forecasts”

07-09 February 2023, Rome (Italy)

In the framework of the SRNWP-EPS 2019-2023 module into the programme NWP Cooperation (NWP-C) of EUMETNET, it is organised in 2023 the last annual Workshop of the current phase: “From ensemble perturbations to an effective usage of ensemble forecasts”.

The Workshop will be organized by the Italian Air Force Meteorological Service as on-site, in person event. Tentatively, the meeting will start on the 07th of February at 09:00 CET and it will end on the 09th of February at 13:00 CET.

The general aim of the Workshop is to bring together the participants in the EUMETNET SRNWP-EPS 2019-2023 module/project as well as scientists working in the field to present and discuss the on-going activities as well as what it is proposed for the next phase.

The workshop will be organized mainly with two branches: the application and the research ones. From the application point of view, the focus will be on the use of the ensembles in the operational forecasting process, dealing with product generation, quantification and communication of uncertainties, mainly related to high impact weather and extremes.

From the research point of view, results and future project guidelines from experiments / operational activities on improving the representation of model uncertainties relevant for forecasting high-impact weather phenomena, together with diagnostic instruments for evaluation, will be shown and discussed. The discussion will mainly focus on the open scientific questions addressed in the research-task document produced in the current phase.

Participants are invited to submit abstracts, mainly on the topics above. The participation of operational meteorologists to contribute to the application part is particularly welcome.
